A Sark is an item of clothing, a nightdress. Together the name means “Short Undergarment”.
Robert Burns, the great poet, used the name Cutty Sark in his epic poem Tam O’Shanter, which depicts the life of the drinking classes in the old Scotch town of Ayr.
